Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.” (Jeremiah 9:23-24)

Father, the world boasts in so many things: money and success and cars and clothes and children and homes.  Remind us this morning that we have nothing to boast in but You.  Every good thing that we have is a gift from Your gracious hand intended to show us more of You.  And so whatever else we may feel inclined to boast in, it must become a boasting in You, who are the Giver of all good things.  May we not boast as the world does – in intellect, power or money – but may we boast in that You have freely chosen to reveal to us the riches of Your glory in Christ Jesus.  Enable us to pursue a deeper knowledge of You today, that we might take joy in Your steadfast love, justice and righteousness.  Help us to live all our days pointing people to boast in Jesus, not us.  Forbid that we should seek glory for ourselves, but rather to let our light shine on earth, that people may see You and give glory to Your holy name.
