32But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. 34It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. 35Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the cock crows, or in the morning— 36lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. 37And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.” (Mark 13:32-37)

Father, our salvation is nearer today than when we first believed (Romans 13:11).  Yet so often we become numb to eternal realities, and fix our minds only on what is temporary and fleeting.  Yet You have made Yourself so clear in Your Word: Jesus is soon returning, and we do not know the day or the hour.  So grant us to give heed to Jesus’ charge, by staying alert and keeping watch.  Jesus is coming to save all those who are “eagerly waiting for Him (Hebrews 9:28), and surely those who are eager for His return will stay awake until His coming.  Forbid that we should slumber through our days on earth, Lord.  Help us to redeem our time, making every moment count for the glory of Your name.  May we eagerly watch today for our “blessed hope, the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13).  Help us to live in such a way as to speed the coming of that great day, so that we might no longer behold the brilliance of Your glory dimly, but face to face.
