Mind and Heart November 20, 2006

Joe,

You have been pretty silent on here lately, so I want you to answer a question.  Given the past two posts on the importance of the mind in loving and worshiping God, I wonder what you would say about the connection between using the mind and having the heart engaged.  With all this talk about using our minds well, we certainly want to stress that intellectual knowledge is not the goal.  The goal is that the heart would be inflamed in passionate worship.

But often I talk with people (and I am one myself) who have amassed a great deal of knowledge about God, but they often complain that their hearts are numb or cold to the knowledge that they have.  Many skeptics of the importance of doctrine will say that is the inevitable fruit of pursuing knowledge, that it makes a person cold-hearted.  You and I both know that isn’t true.  But the question remains, how does the information in our minds penetrate into the hearts?  I know you have thought about that a lot, so I thought it would be helpful to share with us your suggestions.

Eager to hear from you,

Larry
