For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Father, we thank You for the perfect life and the sacrificial death of Your Son, Jesus Christ.  We know that it is only by being in Him through faith that His righteousness is imputed to us.  Apart from Him, we have no hope of satisfying Your perfect justice, and are doomed to an eternity of suffering in the fires of hell.  Having received Your free gift, Lord, forbid that we should try to earn our way towards You with religious works.  Bible reading, prayer, evangelism, killing sin, are all evidences of grace which all of Your true followers will grow in.  But forbid that we should bring those gifts to You as a way of gaining acceptance with You, and in doing so belittle the sufficiency of Your cross.  Help us today to rest in Jesus Christ, who has borne all of our sins once for all, and who has given us His perfect righteousness by which we may now draw near to You freely.  Open our hearts, Father, to rejoice in this indescribable gift!
