“11To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are poorly dressed and buffeted and homeless, 12and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; 13when slandered, we entreat. We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.” (1 Corinthians 4:11-13)

Father, free us from the American pursuit of comfort and ease. Strip us of every remnant within us that longs for the approval of man, and give us such a burning passion for Your renown that we would joyfully bear the reproach of being the scum of the world, if only we could fulfill our purpose of making Your glory known in a dark and sinful world. You do not promise us ease, Lord. But You do promise us that if we suffer with you now, we will be glorified with You for eternity (Romans 8:16-17). Help us, Lord, to embrace suffering for the sake of Your great name.
