America: Christian Nation? December 16, 2006

Joe,

Al Mohler addresses the issue of whether America is a Christian nation in this short article. As always, I like his insight, and I for one am not particularly fond of the notion that America is a Christian nation. I read a story last week where a Rabbi threatened to sue officials from the Seattle Airport because they had many Christmas trees around the airport, but no Menorah. Rather then put up a Menorah, the airport chose to take down all the Christmas trees. Perhaps people will think this is blasphemous, but I like it. I need to be reminded that this society is not exactly friendly to my religious convictions. That is the way it is supposed to be; that is the path Christ has called us to. “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12).

Every year around this time I hear Christians lamenting how Christ is being removed out of Christmas. But the drift away from the Christian “roots” of this country really does not bother me. I think that the sooner we as the body of Christ come to recognize ourselves as strangers and aliens in the good old USA, the better off we will be as a Church. Yet with many people clinging to certain rights that we as Christians have, and expecting the rest of our godless society to go along with our political viewpoints and morals, it is hard to truly embrace being aliens. I say, let the division between our culture and our faith in Christ get even larger if it must. It will serve to separate the wheat from the chaff, and the light of Christ will then truly be seen for what it is, instead of being mistaken for Christmas trees and Santa Claus.

Christians in America are a remnant, and it really doesn’t matter how many Christmas trees there up this year, that will always be the case. Living out the demands of Jesus will bring hostility in America just as it does in every nation. Will we as Christians embrace life as aliens, or will we pout when godless America doesn’t give us our way?
