“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment…” (Philippians 1:9)

O Father, help us not to drift too far on one side or the other of this balance.  Paul’s desire for the Philippians was that love would abound, but that it would abounds in knowledge and all discernment.  Most branches of the Church today emphasize only one side.  Either love is to abound apart from knowledge and discernment, or there is much knowledge but no love.  Your desire is that love should abound within us, by means of a growing knowledge of You and discernment of the Truth that glorifies You.  Forbid that we should believe the lie that doctrine divides; the Apostle says that right knowledge causes love to abound, not division.  And keep us also from thinking that because we have right information, it doesn’t matter how loving we are.  Make our love for You and for others grow today, Lord; not apart from knowledge, but by means of it.
