Joe,

As I said yesterday, I’m not sure how much you are in touch with the American media, so I don’t know if you heard yet about the shooting that happened last night in a Salt Lake City Mall. Here is a report from CNN’s website, five people killed by one 18 year-old gunman.

I couldn’t help but think of James 4, “13Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” We truly do not know what a day will bring. Michelle and I went to the Cherry Hill Mall yesterday afternoon to look for some maternity clothes for her. At no point did it even cross our minds that a gunman might be right around the corner ready to take our lives. Each day truly is a gift, and none of us knows what the next day will bring.

I was reminded of the resolution that Jonathan Edwards made at age nineteen, “Resolved, never to do anything that I should be afraid to do if it were the last hour of my life.” Our lives are a vapor, and even a trip to the mall may prove to be the last hour of our lives. We live in a fallen and deprave world, in which our only comfort and safety is found in Jesus.

May God give us the grace to live each and every hour as if it were our last,

Larry
