“8Do not remember against us our former iniquities; let your compassion come speedily to meet us, for we are brought very low. 9Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and atone for our sins, for your name’s sake!” (Psalm 79:8-9)

Father, we praise You for making full atonement for our sins through the all-sufficient sacrifice of Your perfect, beloved Son.  We take heart in knowing that the ground of our forgiveness is not in our own worth, but in the intensity of Your passion for Your own great name.  ‘Atone for our sins, for your name’s sake!’  In sending Christ to be the propitiation of our sins, You have displayed the diverse excellencies of Your glory, in being a God who is just and holy, yet also merciful and gracious.  Both justice and mercy mingle sweetly together at Calvary.  Forbid, Lord, that we should run from You when we have sinned.  Let us run to You, with the rock-solid assurance that You are a gracious and forgiving God.  It is Your kindness which leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4).  So speak tenderly to us, Father, and remind us of the abundance of Your steadfast love, that we may be kept from sinning against You.
