“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.” (Philippians 4:4)

Help us, Father, to take Your commands seriously.  This is not a suggestion that we rejoice, but a commandment.  And to rejoice not some of the time, not only when things are comfortable, but to rejoice always.   Grant us, Lord, to feel how humanly impossible this command is. “Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy…” (Luke 6:22-23).  Who is sufficient for these things, Lord?  How can we rejoice in being hated?  Only if we are so jealous for the glory of Your name that we find our joy not in comfort, but in Your name being exalted.  Change our hearts, Father, and grant us to find our highest joy not in being made much of, but in making much of You.  May we spend our lives seeking to make others joyful in Christ.  For this is the pathway to true, everlasting joy.
