By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.” (1 John 3:16)

Father, You have told us that people will know we are Your followers by whether or not we love.  “As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34).  We know love by beholding the wonders of Your sacrificial death on the Cross.  This is the kind of love we ought to show to our brothers and sisters.  Free us, Lord, from the deadly grip of self-absorption and selfish ambition.  Help us to regard others as more significant than ourselves, so that we might work tirelessly for the joy of others in You, even when we have to sacrifice something valuable for ourselves.  For nothing could bring us greater joy, than to see others know You and love You more.  Empower us to lay down our rights and pleasures in this life, that we might be used by You to prepare others for the life to come.
