Silent Church May 18, 2007

Joe,

I don’t often find much material for the blog on ESPN.com but I was struck by this statement from Chauncey Billups after the Pistons eliminated the Bulls from the playoffs on Chicago’s home court:

CHICAGO — Chauncey Billups mentioned how quiet the United Center was after the game. If there’s one benefit to closing out a series on the road, that’s it.”In a strange sort of way it always feels better to close it out on the road,” Billups said. “That silence, like church.”

I suppose Billups assumes that churches are boring, lifeless places where unhappy people go?  The sad reality is that in many churches he is right.  We have the greatest news of the world, yet in many places worship services have the same feel of a beloved playoff team having just been eliminated from the playoffs.

May such things never be able to be said about our churches!

Larry
