And Can it Be? June 5, 2007

Joe,

I’m told that the soteriology of the Wesley brothers was not exactly in accord with how I understand the Scriptures; but as I’ve been pondering the words to one of Charles’ well-known hymns, I am trying to figure out where I disagree!

Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray—
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

That’s some marvelous stuff!  It’s amazing, isn’t it, how if I mention the word ‘irresistible’, then a big disagreement arises!

I don’t know what else John and Charles believed, but I give a big Amen to these words, and to these truths.

I have always found the first verse to be very powerful, but especially recently after reading “Living the Cross-Centered Life” by C.J. Mahaney

And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain—
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
