What the World Eats June 10, 2007

Not that we’re on a Cal Ripken type of streak or anything, but I thought I’d get something up today to keep things rolling.  I know you are busy getting the family readjusted to life in the USA.

I came across this link from Time Magazine on Justin Taylor’s site, and I thought it was interesting.  It is a pictorial of what different people around the world eat in a given week, with the amount of money that they spend on food.  Picture #3 was especially sobering for me.  We take far too much for granted.

Thanks, Larry. Really interesting stuff.
Those pictures — wow.
So, here’s what I did. I showed them to my six year old son.
And when we got to picture 3, he said, “Wow, Dad, how much do they spend on their food?”
I said, “$1.23 per week.”
My son — for his six year old chores — gets $2 per week allowance.
And I think he “got it.”
At least, I hope he did.

That is a great idea to show the photos to your kids, Jim. Living in our culture, it is certainly easy for the little ones to assume that how they live is ‘normal’. What a great reminder that we’re not ‘normal’, and a great illustration that the word ‘need’ ought to be carefully used.
